You have a couple of alternatives at your disposal if you want to rotate text in Word. The first option is not half as good as the second, though: • use an image for the text and rotate that • insert a text box to contain the text, and rotate that In the good old days (bad old days), the only option Word gave us was the first one.
Note: To rotate text in Word for Mac, you must first place the text in a text box, and then rotate the text box. On the View menu, click Print Layout. Click the object that you want to rotate or flip, and then, depending on the kind of object that you clicked, click the Format tab or the Format Picture tab. I'm afraid this isn't as simple as it may see it should be. Word is not geared to displaying anything other than linear text. Text boxes cannot be rotated, but even if they could the text within would remain horizontal as is the case with other shapes which can contain text.
The big disadvantage of using an image to display text is that the text is not editable in an image. However, Word 2010 (and I think Word 2007, too) gives you the facility to insert a text box into your document, and the text box can then be rotated. To insert a text box, go to the Insert tab and click Text Box (in the Text group on the right). You will see a cornucopia of different styles of text box to insert, but let’s keep things simple and select the Simple Text Box.

If I switch to portrait and rotate the box, I lose text. It looks as though Word will only display what fits within the text box in its horizontal position; e.g., if it were 7' long by 5' high in landscape, when it's rotated vertically only 5' of the 7' is displayed.
The text box then appears in your document with sample text for you to replace with your own. The text is automatically highlighted, so as soon as you start typing, your text will replace the sample text. While the text box is selected, you’ll notice a green “handle” at the top. When you hover your cursor over it, the cursor changes to “rotate”. Left click on that and drag left or right to rotate the box anti clockwise or clockwise.

There are some other options available, too. Whenever a textbox is selected, you will see the Drawing Tools tab appear in, and within that, the Format tab. On the Format tab, you will find the Rotate command (in the Arrange group to the right), and we need to click that. There are several preset options like Rotate Right 90 and Rotate Left 90, that will show you a preview if you hover over them. If you select More Rotation Options at the bottom you can specify the precise rotation you need in degrees.
